A Question on Relevance: The Role of and History to Heritage

Image
JERONE AVEL S. CANSINO,  MAED Social Science Diploma in Archaeology In this article, I am going to discuss the role of "History" in "Heritage" and its relevance. But before we jump to that, we must understand what we mean when we say History and Heritage. After comparing the definitions of History and Heritage, we can see for ourselves the overlaps between these two terms, and from that, we can conceptualize the role of History in Heritage. And from that, I will present various examples from the heritage literature. This concept is often used interchangeably, but Heritage and History are two different but related things. Understanding the meanings and definitions of these two terms could help us understand their relationship. What is History? For starters (which I know you are not), the term history is etymologically related to " historie " which means "to see." In other languages, History tells a "story" or a narrative   (Le Goff,

Why Teachers Should Read Paulo Freire as A Teacher: A Reading Guide for Freire

Image
JERONE AVEL S. CANSINO, MAED   In this article, I want to share one particular book. This book is titled “Pedagogy of the Oppressed,” and for me, this is one of the best Philosophical pieces written about the impact of education on human society. It is a seminal book written by Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire. He published it in 1970. Here, he presented a critical and transformative approach to education and is often considered a foundational text in the field of critical pedagogy. I would love to say that as a teacher, this work has influenced me far beyond my four-year professional education training during my undergraduate school years. I have heard (or read) somewhere that you know you are reading a good Philosophical work when you get yourself disturbed and when your perception of reality is shaken. This exactly happened to me. The book is rather short as it is only composed of 4 Chapters. The first chapter justifies the “ pedagogy of the oppressed .” Here, he hig

How to Start Your Research?

Image
In this article, I want to give you some tips on how to proceed with writing your research. Whether you are in your high school years or a university student, writing theses and dissertations, the hardest part is knowing how to start. In my case, my Master's Thesis took me at least 6 months. Don't get me wrong, in these 6 long months, I was not able to finish my research proposal. It was long and grueling, yet I was not able to accomplish even a single chapter. Believe this is because of the fact that I wrote my first thesis when I was already in my final year as a Master of Arts student. I am already in graduate school. This happened because my undergraduate degree does not require an undergraduate thesis. This is the reason why the struggle is so real for me. The biggest problem I could remember is that I do not know what I am doing. So first, in this article, I share with you the important insights from my experiences. In Selecting a topic, make sure that it genuinely

On Marcos and Martial Law

1. https:/

Two Reasons Why I Love to Watch Mr. Iglesias series on Netflix

These past few days, I found time watching the Netflix Series of Fluffy (Gabriel Iglesias). In this movie, Gabe plays a high school history teacher who uses an “unconventional” approach in dealing with his students. It is a situational comedy, and it features a series of mean exchanges of words. I believe that it is still an ongoing series. I am not aware of what is happening to this because I barely had the time to research it.   1.     The characters   In this series, I love how the characters present cultural diversity. I love how it is presented or how I think it challenges racism and other social issues. I love the way different social and cultural stereotypes are presented and simultaneously, destroyed by conversation from the characters. I also like the character development of the Asian character Grace Lee in her transition from a shy freshman to a character who is not very shy to drop her one-liners. Although annoying, it is interesting to see how Carlo (the insecure assistant

Review on a Netflix Movie 10,000 BC

10,000 BC Link It was at the height of the Enhanced Community Quarantine when boredom struck me. It was then that I decided to borrow the Netflix account of my friend and browse for some films to spend time with. Actually, I should not feel bored because I have a lot of things to do, but I am not in the mood to do it. So here is the catch: I found a movie with the title 10,000 B.C. As an Archaeology student, of course, I wanted to give this film a chance. I was about a hunting-gathering village that lives in a certain mountainous area filled with ice. They were hunting mammoths. Yes, those gigantic elephants with furs. I am not interested in giving more details about it. You can just watch the Movie. So, my review here is focused on the archaeology of the Movie. I will comment on the accuracy of the representations of the Movie to the mainstream archaeological knowledge on "prehistory" or what is termed by one of my professors as "paleo history." So the Mov

Using Mendeley Software for Easy Citation for your Academic Essays and Researches

Writing research is annoying especially when your are finished with your draft and you are now making the reference section of your research. I recall all those punishing hours looking at your references and writing them down in a very not simple manner because you must adhere to a certain citation style. It was not a problem anymore thanks to Mendeley. It helped me cite resources while I write. I will not discuss here ho to use the software as there are lots of youtube videos that can teach you how to use it. The links will be posted below. It was while I am writing my Master's Thesis when I first discovered this life hack and I have used it ever since.I showed below a snipped dashboard of my Mendeley. There I created different folders and I filled it up with the research articles that I have used in writing my papers. It is actually a way of organizing the references. Technically, I am creating here my library.  Btw. I do not own the videos 1.  How to use Mendel
